Community Wildlife Interactions Map · Southeast Alaska

Stewardship Through Action.

A free, community-driven app for logging marine mammal sightings and reporting potential incidents across Southeast Alaska.

By turning everyday encounters on the water into a living map, we help people watch and enjoy wildlife more responsibly.

Built in Juneau, for the whole region.

What Alaska Marine Animal Watch does

Four Actions. One App.

01 · Log

Real Sightings

Whales, sea lions, otters, porpoises and more — species, count, behavior, photos, and GPS location.

02 · Map

Live Map

Sightings populate a public map so operators see recent activity and avoid crowding the same animals.

03 · Report

Report Violations

Confidential reporting of harassment and approach-distance breaches and photos for enforcement.

04 · Sync

Works Offline

Out of cell range? Reports save to the device and sync the moment signal returns. iOS, iPad & Android.

Our goals

Why we're building it.

Stewardship Through Action

We help people protect what they love by watching it responsibly.

Reduce Wildlife Disturbance

Real-time awareness so boats spread out instead of converging on one pod.

Strengthen Enforcement

Get credible reports to the right agencies with location, time, and evidence. With anonymous options.

Build an Open Record

A community dataset of regional marine-mammal activity that scientists and policymakers can use.

How the data flows

From the Water. For the Record.

01

Field Report

Logged in-app with GPS & photo.

02

Secure Intake

Identities kept private.

03

Open sightings feed.

04

Working with Partners

Light-touch and Reciprocal.

Shared datasets are pulled on a schedule into our own cache — never per-user requests against a partner's servers — and always carry clear attribution and a link back. We're glad to send sightings and photos back to research catalogs, follow licensing terms, and keep sensitive reports confidential.
